The SM57 is a great mic but needs a lot of gain. the 2i2 doesn't have enough available gain for some dynamic mics on soft sources. In addition the noise floor of the 2i2 is quite high when comparing to professional preamps, so cranking the gain is going to give you a noticeable amount of "hiss".
